Global Versions Of Only Fools and Horses

What's 'Lovely jubbly' in Portugeuse?

Global Versions Of Only Fools and Horses
21 February 2012

With the exception of the The Office, UK sitcoms rarely translate well across the pond, which is why the recent news about the US version of Only Fools and Horses has got us a little concerned.

While we know John Leguizamo is set to play Del Boy, Dustin Ybarra (nope, no idea either) as Rodney and, brilliantly, Christoper Lloyd as Grandad , we're still left wondering whether it will be any good. In a bid to calm our fears we've taken a look at other remakes from around the world. There’s, erm, mixed results…

Country: Portugal

Title:O Fura-Vidas (Outside of the Law)

The Portuguese version stuck close to the original with a few changes. Instead of Peckham, the brothers lived in Sapadores, a poor borough of Lisbon. They drove a blue 4-wheeler, with Fintas & Fintas (the brothers' name), Import Export, New York, Paris, Sapadores on the side. However, the Nelson Mandela House name stayed the same. Bonus points for keeping the original theme tune too.

Country: The Netherlands

Title:Wat schuift't? (What's it worth?)

The Netherlands version was the first of the remakes. In this version the Trotters were renamed the Aarsmans. While we can't speak Dutch, there's no mistaking which one is Del and which is Rodders.

Country: Slovenia

Title:Brat bratu (Brother to brother)

The third country to re-make the show was Slovenia. All episodes were based on the original British storylines, made with OFAH writer John Sullivan. In the video below, the flat is essentially a replica of the British version plus Del Boy has that same swagger. The series was cancelled after thirteen episodes were aired due to poor ratings.
