Welcome to the bold, block-based future of the smartphone: Google's Project Ara.
Dave Hakkens first grabbed the tech world's attention back in September 2013 with his modular mobile concept, 'Phoneblocks'. Rather than replacing your phone for the latest model, Hakkens' efficient concept would allow owners to swap out defunct components when required: a bigger battery, smaller camera or new processor could slot in to a base board in Lego-like fashion.
Such was the brilliance of Phoneblocks that Motorola soon got on board. Fears arose that Project Ara might have been killed off once Google sold off Motorola, but the search giant saw enough potential in the novel smartphone to keep a hold of it.
Ahead of its first developer conference on 15 and 16 April, Google has teased the final designs of the Ara. Three different screen sizes will be available, a phlablet sized grid of 4x7 'modules', a pocket-friendly 3x6 model pictured above and a mini 2x5 - whose price is rumoured to start at £30.
