John Travolta's ‘Gotti’ looks like your next must-watch gangster film
This year's big summer crime movie
There’s something about the gangster movie genre that throws up classic after classic.
We’re perfectly happy to overlook the odd turkey when the best mob movies are so good, and the likes of Goodfellas and The Godfather are among the best around.
Gotti might not have a director of the calibre of Martin Scorsese or Francis Ford Coppola, but it looks well worth a watch if the latest trailer is anything to go by.
The John Travolta film is due to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 15 May, and it looks like we’re in for a treat.
A semi-biographical film based around the life of notorious mobster John Gotti and his son John Jr, the film will see Travolta’s on-screen wife played by his real-life spouse, Kelly Preston.
It’s directed by Kevin Connolly, best known for his part in Entourage, and other cast members include William DeMeo (The Sopranos), Pruitt Taylor Vince (The Walking Dead) and Stacy Keach (American History X).
As for the film’s score – it has been composed by none other than Mr Worldwide himself, Pitbull.
And if you were concerned about authenticity, the real John Gotti Jr was involved as a key adviser on the film, according to ABC.
The film is Travolta’s biggest role since his involvement in The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story.
Gotti was initially due to be released late last year, but delays have meant it is yet to land in cinemas.
American viewers will get to watch it from mid-June, while we can anticipate a similar release time in the UK.
There’s never a bad time for a big gangster film, especially one focusing on one of the most recognisable names in the world of organised crime.
