It was always a risk bringing back The Crystal Maze without original host Richard O’Brien. He was the perfect mix of funny, weird and a little bit scary.
But, we’re pleased to report, new host Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, etc.) is absolutely brilliant as his replacement. And fans will be over the moon to hear that Channel 4 has confirmed it’s commissioned 12 more episodes of the show.
Commissioning editor Tom Beck said in a statement: “The return of The Crystal Maze has been a huge success on 4, thanks in no small part to the brilliance of Richard Ayoade as the Maze Master and the inspired production team at Fizz. I’m particularly pleased by the number of young viewers who loved the show – and it’s nice to have finally made a programme I can watch with my children”.
Executive producer Neale Simpson added: “It was a huge privilege bringing this show back and it’s been wonderful seeing young audiences engage with the new series and our magnificent Maze Master. We can’t wait to get back to creating more crystal collecting chaos. Can we possibly top Rob stuck on a spinning planet?”
The show will continue to be filmed at the purpose-built set spanning more than 30,000 square feet at Bristol’s Bottle Yard Studios.
And on Twitter, the show has explained how you can take part in the next season.
A Crystal Maze spokesperson said: “We’re looking for more terrific teams to tackle the ultimate time-travelling adventure. Think you can you outwit Jarhead? Are you brave enough to face an automatic lock-in situation?
“All you need to do is assemble a team of plucky people and get in touch. The maze is genuinely open for all, so as long as you are fun, enthusiastic and highly entertaining when falling off wet logs, we want to hear from you!
“Applications are open from today, Tuesday 23 January, and close at 11.59pm on Sunday 4 March.”
So, head over here if you want to sign up to take part in the new episodes.
