Sticking to a regular workout is tricky enough without treadmill tedium and Loose Women on the wall-mounted TV de-motivating you. Maximuscle fitness expert Sean Lerwill (Maximuscle.com) explains how to stay focused.
“Firstly, know that everybody is different and it’s important to know yourself,” explains Lerwill. “If you know you find it stressful going to the gym at 6 o’clock in the evening when it’s busy, then make sure you go at another time or go for a run outside instead.
“Some people find working out with friends helps. Start organising that day’s session for yourself and a couple of friends, then rotate. Training programmes and fitness apps are another good way to introduce variety.”
There’s also a benefit in timing your visit with a TV distraction that interests you. “I told one guy who hated running to hit the treadmill when a football match he wanted to watch was on. He’d do a 45-minute run, stretch at half-time and cycle during the second half.”
