With Google and Mercedes just two firms currently melding the automotive with the autonomous, the dawn of the driverless car is well and truly upon us - prefiguring the real prospect of Johnny Cabs.
But what, you may well ask, of passenger comfort? Turns out major auto design firm Rinspeed have been wondering the same, and ahead of next month’s Geneva Motor Show, its greatest thinkers have mocked up exactly what they think luxury driving will look like in the next few decades and beyond - and, let’s just say it’s not like your average sci-fi taxi.
Based out of a highly evolved Tesla S, the XchangE is luxury driving of the future. And as you won’t be doing much of that, you won’t need a fixed seat, meaning these chairs swivel a full 180 degrees, even allowing you to swivel back to the windshield and have the steering wheel float into your control should you fancy putting a shift in.
The back seats, meanwhile, will fold down to reveal a 52-inch 4K-resolution display with gesture control, giving you essentially a miniature cinema-on-wheels; the LED-lined Plexiglas roof can light up in all manner of colours, while the dashboard comes with Swiss watchmaker Carl F. Bucherer’s Patravi TravelTec wristwatch fitted in a transparent globe, spinning whenever the electric motor is turned on.
Admittedly, these designs are a long way from fruition. Though, when they are a reality, prepare to never hear the words 'Are, 'we', 'there' and 'yet' in the same sentence again.
