Rumours about the iPhone 8 have been flying around the internet for months.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Apple’s increasingly talented smartphone, so it’s fair to assume there are going to be some pretty big exterior changes. The iPhone desperately needs a design refresh to make it interesting again, particularly considering the near universal praise that the brand new (and definitely not on fire) Samsung Galaxy S8 has been getting.
You should obviously take any leaks with a pinch – sometimes handful – of salt, but new photos obtained by tech site BGR definitely look the part. The iPhone 8 will, if these images (believed to a mockup of the finalised design) are the real deal, as suspected, feature a stainless steel frame sandwiched between two slightly curved 2.5D glass panels that stretch right to the edge of the screen. There are no visible bezels and no home button. It’s unclear whether Apple will embed the Touch ID sensor underneath the glass, as previous reports have suggested.
“The result will supposedly appear seamless, bringing Apple closer than ever to realising Jony Ive’s dream of an iPhone made of one continuous sheet of glass,” say BGR.
On the rear of the device there’s a dual-lens camera, but it’s vertically positioned, as opposed to the iPhone 7 Plus’ horizontal setup. The camera bump was a minor negative in pretty much every review of the most recent iPhones, but it doesn’t look like Apple has found a way to get rid of it just yet.
And before you ask, no, the headphone jack is not being resurrected. It’s dead. Gone. Forget about it.
There’s no word yet on the supposed OLED screen or wireless charging feature, so we’re just going to have to wait and see. If Apple pulls all of the above off, though, it could make the Christmas showdown with Samsung very interesting. If you believe the gossip, we’ll know for sure at a launch event most likely to be pencilled in for September.
