There's something deliciously dark about Scottish authors. Whether it's the twisted plots of the late Iain Banks, or the bloodstains littering the work of Mark Millar, they know how to do 'gritty'.

The books of Irvine Welsh are arguably the shadiest of them all. Ahead of the launch of the film adaptation of his 1998 work Filth, Welsh spoke to ShortList about comparing his work to the legendary Trainspotting, the darkness of Scotland and the weather.

Filth is in cinemas now. So go and see it. But don't take your nan.
