Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has been suspended by the broadcaster after footage emerged of him spitting in the direction of the driver and 14-year-old passenger of a passing car.
Carragher, who made more than 700 appearances for Liverpool and England during his 17-year playing career, had already apologised for the incident, both publicly and privately to the family affected.
The incident came after one of the occupants of the car appeared to goad him about Liverpool’s Premier League defeat at Manchester United.
“All I can do is apologise as much as I can because obviously I can’t go back,” Carragher said.
“Obviously I’ve done that with the family, hopefully they accept that, and I’d like to apologise again to them.”
Carragher had been due to appear on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football broadcast ahead of the Premier League game between Stoke City and Manchester City, but will no longer be in attendance.
“Sky takes this matter extremely seriously and strongly condemns Jamie’s actions,” a statement from the broadcaster reads.
As reported by the Guardian, Carragher will also now no longer appear on TV3 in Denmark this week, where he had been expected to act as a pundit for Tuesday’s Champions League match between Manchester United and Sevilla.
The length of Carragher’s suspension remains unconfirmed, with Sky expected to take time over their final decision, and he could yet be removed from his role permanently.
The 40-year-old, who played for England at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, has been a regular on Monday Night Football since 2013.
