We’ve already had the news that James Marsden will be joining the cast of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie adaptation as a human character, but who else is set to enter the fray? Well, a one Mr. Jim Carrey, from being-the-funniest-man-in-the-entire-world-in-the-90s fame - you know the guy.
Paramount are poaching Carrey for the bad guy role, that of everyone’s favourite bulbous moustachioed flying buttwipe, Dr. Robotnik, aka Doctor Eggman. The part will presumably be motion-capture - which Carrey has experience with (A Christmas Carol), but even if he’s required to sit in a make-up chair for ten hours a day, he’s been there, done that, too (How the Grinch Stole Christmas).
Carrey will be joining the aforementioned James Marsden and Tika Sumpter (Ride Along) in the movie, which will be directed by first-time director Jeff Fowler, who appears to be a relative newcomer to the industry - not entirely sure how he landed this massive job.
Either way, a big name like Carrey should spell success at the old box office for this one. Jimmy boy hasn’t done much movie acting of late - his last credit being in 2016 with the non-comedy Dark Crimes, so those wondering if he’d ever be funny again should have something to look forward to with Sonic.
In the meantime, to get your Carrey fix, his latest project, Kidding, is currently set to air this September - although those wanting classic ‘90s Carrey goofball might be best off dusting off that old VHS of Ace Ventura, because it doesn’t exactly look like a laugh-riot:
