John Oliver had the best answer to the FBI over its fight with Apple over encryption
Wondering where we’re at with the FBI and Apple case over the encryption of a dead terrorist’s smartphone?
While courts and public opinions seems split on the matter, which is heavily complex, John Oliver has now weighed in, managing to make the situation a little more understandable for everyone not following it intensely.
Speaking on Last Week Tonight, Oliver all but echoed Apple’s CEO Tim Cook's belief that nobody should want a master key built if it's capable of opening hundreds of millions of locks, claiming it would have a significant impact on civil liberties ,while also pointing out that this isn't the first time government law agencies have sought out back door hacks for consumer technology.
Interestingly, the FBI have previously spoken of the data that potential criminals may be using behind pincodes - a term the spooks call 'going dark'.
However, stating the importance of these encryption codes to innocent people and the information we hold dear – "financial information, health records, dick pics, trade secrets, classified government records, dick pics" – the British HBO host uses his unique brand of satire to argue that the tech giants are actually well within their rights over their refusal to crack the code.
Oh and Oliver even references Furbys - and if that doesn't win an argument of this magnitude then nothing will.
