'Bill & Ted 3' is officially happening and today is a glorious day
Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are both confirmed
Which film do you think of when I mention the name ‘Keanu Reeves’ to you?
The Matrix, maybe, though probably not one of the sequels. That’s what IMDb suggests he’s best known for, at least.
Perhaps it’s Speed. Or Point Break. Or, if you want to play devil’s advocate, maybe you’ll try to claim it’s The Devil’s Advocate.
You’re all wrong, of course, and the correct answer (yes, there’s a correct answer to this seemingly subjective question) is Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. For which we’re getting a long-awaited second sequel. Excellent.
More than a quarter of a century has passed since the second film in what will soon be a trilogy, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, and the upcoming film – entitled Bill & Ted Face the Music – will see Reeves reunited with co-star Alex Winter.
Winter, who played Bill, has been just as involved behind the camera as he has in front of it in the interim, directing multiple TV episodes and shorts; he’s currently working on a documentary about the life of Frank Zappa.
According to Variety, the stars of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s films will be joined by director Dean Parisot – best known for ‘90s comedy Galaxy Quest and Bruce Willis action comedy Red 2. Original writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon are back on board, too, which is nice.
It marks official confirmation of the news we got from Winter a couple of years ago, and it’s exciting to have a name and more details attached to the project.
“We couldn’t be more excited to get the whole band back together again,” said Reeves, while Winter described the combination of writers and director as a “dream team”.
Oh, and did we mention Steven Soderbergh is on board as an executive producer? Well, that too.
Sure, the filmmakers will have to work around Bill & Ted being 30-odd years older and, while we’re sure they have a plan, the whole time-travel concept ought to make things a great deal easier than if, say, they were making a sequel to 2021-set ‘futuristic’ Reeves vehicle Johnny Mnemonic.
Reeves is currently filming John Wick 3, due for a 2019 release, while he is also involved in a number of other works in pre-production. Consequently, no date is set for Bill & Ted Face the Music at the time of writing.
