All that time spent driving cars in videogames could soon be useful in real life if Jaguar's new 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen technology comes to pass.
They've unveiled this fascinating new video showing an update to its ongoing research project to use augmented reality to improve safety. They've expanded their 'Transparent Bonnet' concept - which uses cameras to relay video to a windscreen display - to cover the 'blind spot' which exists where the pillars between side windows stand. The pillars will seemingly carry screens which then display what lies behind them when a driver turns round to look.
In addition, they've added videogame-style tricks to the windscreen which alert the driver to potential hazards - such as a pedestrian on their mobile phone - and also a 'ghost car', which in theory would be a safer way to use navigation; you would follow this, rather than constantly looking down at a route on a separate screen.
None of this tech is available yet - but it's surely a matter of time; that is, if driverless cars don't get there first and make the whole 'driving' thing completely unnecessary.
