A futuristic action film about time-travel, gangsters and assassins?. What’s that? Featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis both playing the same person? You had us at futuristic.
So here’s the teaser trailer for Looper, Rian Johnson’s action thriller about Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – an assassin who lives in 2042 but – get this – his victims come from the future. But guess what, time-travel lovers, there’s a paradox. One of his victims turns out to be his older self, played by Bruce Willis. He escapes and young Joe has to hunt himself down.
Aside from an intriguing plot the film looks stylish, skilfully bringing the classic mobster aesthetic into the future. It’s grimy and dark and, refreshingly, doesn’t make a big deal about being set in 2042.
Gordon-Levitt spent three hours in make-up every day to make him look like Willis. He also studied his films, even putting the audio files onto his MP3 player so he could master that gruff voice.
So do you think he’s studied hard enough to nail the role?
Looper is released in cinemas on September 28th.
