Bereft Luther fans can finally stop staring pensively over cityscapes and hanging suspected perpetrators out of multi-storey car parks, as their favourite furrow-browed DCI is set to return for a cinematic prequel.
Series creator Neil Cross was speaking at the annual Edinburgh TV festival when he announced hopes for a big screen outing for John Luther, telling the tale of the maverick's rise through the force.
“I’ve written the script and we hope to get the film made next year," said Cross. “Idris is a brilliant leading man and we’ve hoped to turn Luther into a movie for a long time. It will follow his career in the earlier days, when he is still married to Zoe, and the final scene in the film is the first of the initial TV series.”
Fans will also be happy to hear that Justin Ripley (Warren Brown) is set to reappear as Luther's sidekick, as well as returns for Ian Reed (Steven Mackintosh) and aforementioned wife Zoe (Indira Varma).
There's no confirmed production date for the Luther film as of yet, which will have to fit around Idris' current work on spy-thriller The Gunman and Beasts of No Nation. We'll keep our ears to the internet for any further details as they emerge.
