Despite their recent rivalry with cats and otters for most fawned over animal online, it's worth remembering that foxes are best known for their sly ruthlessness. Disney didn't choose a fox to play Robin Hood by chance.
Re-learning this lesson the hard way, 29-year-old Seb Baker found himself at the mercy of a red fox while walking home from the supermarket.
The fox had been sitting on the kerb watching his 15-stone prey but once Baker went down an alleyway, his mugger leapt at him and tried to steal his shopping. Baker apparently made several attempts to escape but was forced into offering some garlic bread to the greedy fox.
The Kent resident then managed to make a desperate escape but suffered a depressingly plain pasta meal soon after.
Wildlife expert John Bryant insisted that we shouldn't expect a fox-fronted crime wave any time soon."Foxes are getting bolder but they are not interested in humans, they are concentrated on food," he said.
"If a fox is jumping at your shopping bag you need to shout at it and chase it off, not just give it the food. The best thing to use is a water pistol."
Which is reassuring to the 0.04% of the population who actually walk around with a Super Soaker on hand.
