Stylist Barnaby Ash reports back on Monday's collections, with style director Adrian Clark's advice on how to get the grooming look of the day
Monday's Milanese offerings included Gucci's latest collection. Inspiration came from cavalry soldiers' wardrobe, with the show blending oversized silhouettes on outerwear with hints of traditional English fabrics. The colour palette included pale blue, ochre, burnt red and parsley green nestled among a neutral palette of micro and oversized checks. After finding her stride a few seasons ago it would seem creative director Frida Giannini is stuck in a creative rut, albeit an elegant one.
Once again Umit Benan put on an enticing performance with a creatively presented collection, inspired by the protagonists of street art. The set was reminiscent of a dark alley, lined with hot dog stands, prostitutes and tuxedo-clad middle class couples on their way home. Each model was clothed in a mix of contemporary street wear and tailoring or 'street with elite', with each wearing a balaclava and carrying a can of spray paint. A pleasing breath of fresh air among the monotonous conveyor belt- like antics of other shows.
After a long break without presenting on the catwalk, Fendi worked its magic on the runway with a handsome and indulgent collection that was inspired by the great outdoors. Presenting garments that take insulation to a whole new level, the show proffered chunky knitwear, needle felted shearlings, oiled leathers fused with wool and huge oversized furs, balanced with clean cut slimline tailoring and workwear references. Fendi, we're glad you're back.
Grooming Tip:
The minimalist collection shown by Paul Surridge for Z Zegna yesterday lent itself to a sharp and sculpted approach to the model's hair. To achieve the architectural effect we recommend L'Oreal Paris Studio Line Style Addicts Spike Fanatic Gel £3.56 (RRP) for 200ml; stockists 0800-0304 032, a sculpting gel formulated to withstand a storm. Apply this invincible gel to damp hair for the wet-look effect, shown on the runway, and comb into shape for added structure.
Such angular modern hair should always be accompanied by a clean shaven jawline, try L'Oreal Paris Anti-Irritation Shave Gel £4.07 (RRP) for 150ml; stockists 0800-0304 032. Enriched with Hydrating Glycerin the new Skin Protect System contained within, this sensitive gel helps to improve razor glide and reduce friction, it also contains two silicons instead of one.
