Morgan Freeman's parody 'Shawshank Redemption' voiceover on Graham Norton was obviously 10/10
"I hope people stop asking me to do stupid voiceovers like this"
Morgan Freeman was a guest on Friday’s The Graham Norton Show, and yes, he did that narrating thing again.
The actor, whose raspy baritone voice might just be the most recognisable in the world, appeared on the sofa alongside Michael Caine, the pair of them in town to promote their new film Going in Style.
Naturally, it wasn’t long before Norton turned the conversation to The Shawshank Redemption, the film that really made the 79-year-old synonymous with grandeur-filled voiceovers. After briefly explaining that the movie – one of the most revered of all time – flopped at the box office because people couldn’t remember what it was called (he recalled a conversation in a lift where a woman cheerfully told him she’d seen him in The Hudsucker Production), Freeman was asked to read aloud a parody of his famous Shawshank narration, the difference being that this one was all about his not-entirely-complimentary opinion of Graham Norton. As usual, he was a good sport about it.
“I hope people stop asking me to do stupid voiceovers like this,” he says at the end, looking intimidatingly serious. “I hope.”
I hope so too, Morgan Freeman, but at the same time, if I ever meet you, I can’t promise I won’t ask you to narrate me tying my shoelaces.
