Myst adaptation headed to TV

This one goes out to all the '90s video gamers for whom the following video evokes significant memories and warm, happy feelings...

News comes via Deadline that the best-selling video game Myst is set to be adapted for a TV series, with an accompanying app extending the story onto viewer's digital devices.

Legendary TV & Digital Media has signed a deal with game developer Cyan Worlds to create a "compelling TV drama" based around the adventure puzzle game of 1993. The former biggest-selling game of all time (shipping 6 million units, overtaken by The Sims 2 in 2002) cast players in the role of the mysterious Stranger. By reading a magical book, players were transported to the world of Myst and tasked with completing a series of puzzle games and logical thinking tasks (it was a lot better than that makes it sound), accessing new levels through additional books.

Given the complex plot of the original game, through which players discovered the backstory of Myst and the life of a family who once lived there, the TV series will most probably be a blend of fantasy and adventure. We're thinking it'll lie somewhere between Lost and The Crystal Maze - but with viewers able to play along with the TV show via a companion app.

It's a bold vision that could see fans of the show attempting to complete puzzles between episodes, unpacking hints as to what's going on and giving a whole new slant to TV 'spoilers'. Here's hoping it does justice to the '90s classic - which you can play here.
