The multiplexes are starting to sweat. The video rental stores are shuffling up to make room for them in the Museum of Defunct Entertainment Outlets - all because Netflix has announced its first deal to stream a film simultaneous to its cinema release.
The world's most popular streaming service has revealed that it's signed a deal with The Weinstein Co. to host the premiere of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny, the sequel to Ang Lee's award winning martial arts romp.
Having already blazed a trail for the future of television releases with House of Cards and Orange is the new Black, the deal will see The Green Destiny released on Netflix at the same time it hits US IMAX screens on 28 August 2015.
HERE ARE 7 MORE UPCOMING SEQUELS YOU PROBABLY DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT
Currently filming under the direction of martial arts and stunt specialist Yuen Wo-Ping, The Green Destiny is based on the fifth instalment of the Crane-Iron Pentalogy series by Wang Du Lu, whose fourth book acted as the source of Lee's original film. Expect more elegantly choreographed combat, complicated love interests and another legendary sword.
There's no word yet on a UK release date, nor whether Netflix will be hosting the premiere for European audiences. We'll let you know as soon as we get word.
