Arthur Scargill, the trade unionist known for his ballot-happy antics during the Eighties miners’ strikes, isn’t someone we’d normally associate with cutting-edge fashion. But behold the 14-piece Burton Montague menswear heritage collection – inspired by the attire of Scargill and his fearless, subterranean workforce.
How did this bizarre-but-inspired idea come about? It’s all down to a talent contest involving the Royal College Of Art, with whom Burton joined forces to award one student the chance to put a capsule collection into production.
And the winner was Liam Hodges. He was inspired while watching a documentary about the miners’ strikes and drew heavily on the ‘spun and dyed’ yarns for which Leeds (where Burton founder Sir Montague Burton built his first factory) was once famous.
The range is available exclusively online and includes a taupe slim-fit heritage wool suit (£244) and green wool worker donkey jacket (£180).
