The announcement of the Oscar winners will no doubt lead to a new stampede to the cinema to check out the big winners but come on guys, we’re not savages any more. We have Netflix and we’ve all worked out we no longer need to ever leave our sofas to be entertained.
And you can waste no time checking out one of the winners last night, as O.J. Simpson: Made in America, which won Best Documentary Feature at the 89th Academy Awards, is already sitting there on iPlayer, waiting for you to watch it.
Much like the man himself (and last night’s Oscars), the award was subject to some controversy, given that - really - it’s a TV series more than a film. It was aired in five parts on ESPN, but was released in its entirety in movie theatres, making it Oscar-eligible, though we’d love to know how many people actually sat through its 7 hours and 47 minutes (36 minutes longer than the previous record-holder, 1969’s War and Peace). You’d need a seriously big bucket of popcorn wouldn’t you.
The five parts of the doc – which uses the life of O.J. Simpson to take a look at the wider American stories of race and celebrity, and which has won a host of other awards other than an Oscar - are available to watch on iPlayer until 22 March, so don’t delay – click below and get stuck in.
