OK, so it’s a bit of a slog to stay up for the whole thing when you can simply bring up Twitter to see what you missed in about 15 seconds, but the Academy Awards remains the high point of the formal menswear calendar.
In a tough year for Hollywood, one of the most diverse Oscar ceremonies in recent memory was refreshing, and the red carpet saw yet more refreshingness, with many opting out of the plain black suit – the sort we’ve been watching blokes trot about in since time immemorial – and into an altogether more exciting territory.
Here are ten of our favourites…
Daniel Kaluuya
Who else to open proceedings? A gold coloured smoking jacket on our favourite Skins actor turned award fodder (sorry, Dev, mate) at the biggest night of his professional career? It’s a yes from us.
James Ivory
Winner of the Best Adapted Screenplay award, James Ivory turned up with Timothée bloody Chalamet emblazoned on his dress shirt. That’s a look we are wholly here for, offsetting the boring ol’ black tux. If only Guillermo Del Toro had had the fish dude’s junk painted onto his shirt maybe he’d be on this list, too.
Tom Holland
Another twist on a classic, Holland’s double-breasted jacket came higher up on his chest (up to about his solar plexus) to create a throwback shape that perfectly complimented carpet pal Allison Williams’ embroidered gown. Good lookin’ out, Tommy.
Matthew McConaughey
Look at that bow-tie. Look at those glasses (Persol’s Tailoring Edition in Iced Brown Tortoise, in case you were wondering). Look at that mouth. The classic Matt McConn mouth. You can just tell he’s finishing off saying “Well, alright…” here, can’t you?
Ansel Elgort
Baby Driver’s Ansel Elgort has had a year. Here he is finishing it off (because Hollywood runs Feb to Feb) in style with a jade velour smoking J and black satin bow-tie.
Jordan Peele
Plumping for a classic look, with an ivory jacket and black trousers, Jordan Peele could’ve worn a T-shirt and cargo shorts and he still would’ve made it onto this list. What a guy.
Lakeith Stanfield
Not only is he carving out a niche for exceptionally memorable smaller roles, but Get Out and Atlanta star Stanfield is also a fuckin’ really cool dresser. Keeping it a little simpler than we’ve seen him before, here, the actor rocks a navy look with standout details. What’s that on his lapel? Well, we don’t know. Looks cool, though.
Armie Hammer
Obviously it helps if you look like ARMIE HAMMER, but this red velvet look makes the guy look like a handsome Christmas present and we’re here for it. Keeping it simple elsewhere, the standout hue of the suit is warm and wearable. Maybe you should dabble yourself, who knows.
Timothée Chalamet
Here’s one you can’t wear if you’re not Timmy, but fair play to him. Looks great, doesn’t he? (Also: read our recent cover feature with the man himself to get the inside scoop on what it’s like to chat to him loads on the phone.)
Adam Rippon
By far the most divisive look here and on the carpet, Olympian Adam Rippon going full bondage at the most prestigious awards show of them all is an undoubtedly strong move. That’s how you get people talking.
