So you know how the Academy (those peeps that decide which films are “good”) came up with that silly new Oscars category for ‘Most Popular Film’ and everyone, including us, hated it with an intense passion? Yeah, remember that?
It was for films normally ignored by the Academy, the type of popcorn-affiliated flick that bangs at the box office, but doesn’t normally get involved with that tiny little gold man and his mates. It was stupid, a silly idea that nobody liked.
Looky:
So,
what,
they’ve,
done,
is,
delete it.
Yep, they’ve realised it was a bad idea, because the entire internet (like, all of it, every single part of it, no take-backs) told them it was. “Hey, Oscar, you dolt! That idea you had was crap and bad, get rid of it!” they said, in those exact words, online, loads of times. So they responded:
“The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is postponing the introduction of the new “popular” Oscar category it had intended to introduce at its upcoming 91st Academy Awards on Feb. 24.”
Academy CEO Dawn Hudson said:
“There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members. We have made changes to the Oscars over the years — including this year — and we will continue to evolve while also respecting the incredible legacy of the last 90 years.”
At least they’re listening to the public, I guess? Like, normally they don’t - it’s a big old boys club, is the Oscars, and outside influence doesn’t normally factor - so it’s good that the public have had an effect on their decisions. This was a bad idea, and we informed them of this, and they listened. It’s embarrassing, sure, but way less embarrassing than actually having that award category at next year’s Oscars.
So, a welcome backtrack on this terrible idea, here, and it’s good.
It’s good and correct that they’ve done this, because it was a very bad idea in the first place. Like, the Oscars are irrelevant nowadays anyway, but at least they stick to their weird, blinkered guns - don’t try and shake things up in an effort to be relevant, just keep it as it is, a big old shed that nobody is allowed in, and everything will be fine. I’ll take the MTV Movie Awards over it any day.
