The best reason to remake a film is when the original had a great idea but didn't quite capitalise on it. That's the case with Pet Sematary, which will be resurrected by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, director of 28 Weeks Later.
Technically, Pet Sematary isn't really a remake of the 1989 movie, it's another adaptation of the Stephen King novel about a man who can't cope with the death of his young son, so inters him in a Native American burial ground, after which things go very, very wrong.
The 1989 version had several very scary moments - the slashed ankle, Zelda (Oh god, Zelda!) - but was pretty schlocky on the whole, so a new take is by no means sacrilege. Fresnadillo did a fine job on 28 Weeks Later, so will hopefully bring out more of the novel's desperation, sadness and horror. Matt Greenberg (Reign of Fire) and David Kajganich (The Invasion) are writing the script.
That spelling of cemetery remains upsetting.
