Police display real wrecked cars in safe driving message

Police in Mexico have come up with a hard-hitting campaign in an effort to encourage people to drive more carefully.

The twisted remains of cars involved in real accidents can be seen peppered by the side of some of the country's most dangerous roads.

Perched on oil drums reading 'si tomas no manejes' (if you drink do not drive), the aim of these wrecks is to spread the message of the dangers of driving too fast or driving while drunk.

Latin America suffers from the highest number of fatalities caused by car accidents in the world. Indeed, more people die on the region's roads each year than due to crime and violence.

Latin America suffers from an accident death rate of 26 fatalities per 100,000 people, with this expected to rise to over 30 per 100,000 people by 2020.

In comparison, in countries such as Sweden and France there are around 5 such fatalities per 100,000 people.
