Radiohead are the new favourites to record the Bond theme

It's starting to feel that there could be more twists and turns in the story of who is recording the SPECTRE theme tune than in the actual film itself.

Crooner Sam Smith was the initial runaway favourite, before a series of social posts from Ellie Goulding suggested that she was going to follow up her enormous Fifty Shades song Love Me Like You Do by taking the hotseat. She most recently Instagrammed a picture of her leaving the legendary Abbey Road recording studios with a caption of 'That's a Wrap'.

However, a curveball has been thrown into the mix with bookmakers William Hill saying that one punter attempted to place a £15,000 bet on Radiohead providing the song. With William Hill saying "Nobody risks £15,000 on a hunch", fellow bookies Coral and Paddy Power also temporarily blocked bets on them. They've now come in to 6/4 favourites, with Sam Smith still at 2/1 and Ellie Goulding at 4/1. An unlikely Adele back-to-back (she, of course, did Skyfall), is rated at 5/1.

Ellie Goulding's publicist has said the rumours of her doing it are "not true", while Smith said he'd "heard Ellie Goulding was going to do it". So basically no one really has a clue.

Radiohead would be a surprise choice to provide the theme - not because they wouldn't be asked, but because they have traditionally shunned mainstream, populist moves in the time since the 1997 classic OK Computer. However, guitarist Jonny Greenwood has composed six film soundtracks and serves as composer-in-residence for the BBC Concert Orchestra. Mind you, perhaps they don't need to bother recording anything new - they do already have the song Motion Picture Soundtrack, after all.
