Robert Downey Jr has some great news for ‘Sherlock Holmes’ fans

How long ago do you think the most recent Sherlock Holmes film was released?
Three years ago, maybe? No? Can’t be more than four, surely?
Six years. Six. More than half a decade. In fact we’re coming up to six-and-a-half since the second instalment in the Guy Ritchie franchise.
After such a long gap, you could be forgiven for thinking Sherlock’s goose was cooked, but there might be life in him yet.
Robert Downey Jr, who played the titular character in 2009’s Sherlock Holmes and 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, has been busy in the years since.
He’s mostly been busy with Iron Man-related duties, playing Tony Stark in five of his last seven films (the exceptions were 2014 releases Chef and The Judge), with two more on the way before the end of 2019, but it feels as though he’s ready to mix things up again.
During a 2016 interview with ShortList, the actor spoke of his hopes to begin work on the third film in the series before the end of that year, but other things clearly got in the way. Now, though, the coast may be looking a little clearer.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Downey Jr grouped his projects into those already underway, those he ‘still wants to do’, and those – like a third Sherlock Holmes film – which he and others are already looking at.
“First of all the missus is front and center with Joe Roth producing Doolittle,” he said, a reference to The Voyage of Doctor Doolittle, co-produced by his wife Susan and starring Downey Jr alongside Michael Sheen, Antonio Banderas and others.
“I’m having a good time, though I decided to give myself, like, 40 additional challenges, like a Welsh accent — which even Welsh people say is hard to do. Then there’s all this stuff down the pike.
“We’re looking at another Sherlock Holmes, we’re developing Perry Mason for HBO. I still want to do Pinocchio.”
While there is no timeframe in place for the next Sherlock Holmes big-screen adaptation, IMDb notes that Ritchie is rumoured to be returning as director, while one would expect Jude Law to reprise his role as Dr Watson and Rachel McAdams to potentially return as Irene Adler.
