Rugrats was a large part of many of our childhoods - Chuckie, Angelica, Tommy and the gang had a wealth of adventures from 1991 to 2004, over a whopping 172 episodes, making it the eighth longest-running American animated TV show ever.
And of course, it being 2018 - the year of the reboot - it’s about time they brought the sucka back. So they are, they absolutely are bringing it back. It’ll hit our screens next year, with Nickelodeon commissioning a 26-episode new season with all your faves returning, as well as a bunch of new characters to keep things fresh.
The show’s original creators, Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain, will all be overseeing the TV reboot, as well as a new movie. So far, there have already been three Rugrats movies: The Rugrats Movie, Rugrats In Paris: The Movie and Rugrats Go Wild - although this new one is planned to be a CGI/live-action hybrid, à la The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.
Sarah Levy, the chief operating officer at Viacom Media Networks and interim president at Nickelodeon, said the show was “one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history”, adding:
“We are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures
“What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can’t wait for today’s kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie and pals.”
Which means that the gang will obviously still be babies and not this nightmarish millennial illustrated vision of how the Rugrats turned out when they grew up.
It is, however, exciting nonetheless and means two Chuckie reboots in one year - one a nice one with ginger hair, the other a terrible murdererous doll with ginger hair. Which will be better? The evil one, obviously, but still - Rugrats is fun, isn’t it?
