Scarface Remake Marches On With 'Straight Outta Compton' Writer

In this industry, you gotta make the box office. Then when you get the box office, you get the 30th anniversary Blu-Ray. Then when you get the 30th anniversary Blu-Ray, you get the reboot.

Yes, Universal's proposed remake of Scarface marches on with news from Entertainment Weekly that Straight Outta Compton writer Jonathan Herman is working on a rewrite.

Drafts had previously been written by Paul Attanasio and David Ayer. And given the iconic nature of the original script, additional work can only be welcomed, even if Herman is already working on a remake of The Birds for Universal.

Brian De Palma's pulpy 1983 crime masterpiece - itself a remake of Howard Hawk's 1932 effort - transported us to the coke-strewn shorelines of Miami, charting the bloody rise of Cuban refugee Tony Montana.

This time around, however, LA is believed to be the city at the heart of the story. This would certainly add relevance to the previous involvement of Ayer, director behind LA-set crime dramas Training Day and End Of Watch.

As for Herman’s new draft, let's hope Tony 2.0 emerges straight outta Cuba.
