How many main characters crop up in the excellent Triple 9? Have a guess. Five? Two and half? Wrong, and wrong again.
Director John Hillcoat’s latest brings eight – yep, you read that right – huge stars to the big screen this February. All right, take a deep breath: Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Aaron Paul, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Norman Reedus and Clifton Collins Jr all feature in this heist pic. Oh, and not forgetting Gal Gadot (AKA Wonder Woman).
The best bit about this star-studded film? You can see it free, of course, and before its release date (19 February), thanks to ShortList Film Club. The script was salvaged from the Black List, an annual survey of the “most liked” screenplays not yet produced, and tells the story of a group of crooked cops who are being blackmailed by the Russian mafia into performing a near impossible heist. To pull it off, they need to cause a ‘Triple 9’ – or rather, the death of a policeman, which will create the ultimate distraction. You know the drill by now: it unsurprisingly all goes very, very wrong.
If you’re already tired of the tear-jerking Oscar dramas streaming out of cinemas, Triple 9 will sort you right out. It’s filled with brutal arrests, bank robberies and enough severed heads to make Eddie Redmayne cry into his golden statue. Consider it a post-Dry January treat, on us.
You can see it for free at the following venues on Wednesday 10 February: at Vue Islington, Vue Manchester Lowry, Vue Piccadilly Circus. Doors open at 6pm for a 6.30pm start.
ALL TICKETS HAVE BEEN ALLOCATED. DO CHECK BACK DAILY AS RETURNS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE
Triple 9 is in cinemas nationwide from 19 February
