Senegal goalkeeper pulls the most ridiculous time-wasting trick we've ever seen
That's one way to kill a few seconds
We don’t know whether to be angry at a clear footballing injustice or simply to applaud the immense creativity on display.
Senegal goalkeeper Khadim N’Diaye went down in football folklore for all the wrong reasons due to a piece of simply outstanding time-wasting during his team’s 2-2 draw with Algeria; a result which sent one of the pre-tournament favourites crashing out.
Running up to take a goal kick, he managed to kick the back of his own calf before collapsing to the ground and writhing around in agony.
Remarkably, he was not even booked; referee Joshua Bondo having clearly missed the incident.
Just as remarkable was the fact that Senegal did not even need to hold on to the point that N’Diaye’s actions helped them grab – having beaten Tunisia and Zimbabwe, they were already through as group winners and had made ten changes from their previous game – N’Diaye being one of them.
Nonetheless, he clearly believed that it was important that Algeria failed to gain the win which they needed – although ultimately it would not have proved enough to have put them through, as Tunisia beat Zimbabwe 4-2 to progress instead.
The 32-year-old keeper, who plays for Guinean side Horoya AC will likely be dropped in favour of regular goalkeeper Abdoulaye Diallo for their quarter-final match on Saturday against Cameroon – but if they need to hang on to a lead with time running out, we’re sure manager Aliou Cissé will be tempted to bring on his star time-waster.
