People are made up for Sergio Garcia after he finally won his first major
He beat Justin Rose in a playoff to claim The Masters on what would have been Seve Ballasteros' 60th birthday
There are some titles it’s OK to lose. Last night, Sergio Garcia – a man widely regarded as the best player to never win a major – ditched that dubious accolade for good, as he beat Justin Rose in a playoff to claim The Masters green jacket.
It was a win full of poignancy – Sergio won his title on what would have been his hero Seve Ballasteros’ 60th birthday, and after 73 unsuccessful major attempts, he finally won his first on the 73rd hole.
Golf fans all over the world were absolutely made up for Garcia, who’d suffered years of bitter disappointment in majors up until this point.
Even Justin Rose, the Brit who missed out on his second major championship at Sergio’s expense, couldn’t begrudge his rival and friend.
Gary Lineker was among the first to congratulate Garcia on Twitter, and Sarah Willett, the wife of last year’s champion Danny, was also delighted for the Spaniard.
Meanwhile, it looks like Richard Osman’s got a very expensive few days coming up...
There were a lot of people remembering this all-time great Sergio Garcia moment, where he literally climbed a tree to play his shot:
But the main emotion was just one of genuine delight for a very deserving man.
