Did you miss him?
Having changed their Twitter profile picture to that of Jim Moriarty on Tuesday, the BBC tweeted the following cryptic tease:
Was Sherlock to return earlier than previously hinted? Would the drama's co-creator Steven Moffat's involvement in Dr Who lead to a crossover special? No. Sorry.
The BBC has confirmed via their Twitter account that Sherlock will receive a special episode, which is set to begin shooting in January 2015. The fourth series will then begin shooting later next year.
While the fourth season's late 2015 shooting date had already been all-but-confirmed by Moffat in an interview with IGN, news of the special, one-off episode will tantalise fans of the BBC's hit drama.
Could it be a Christmas special, in which Sherlock faces off against the recently returned Jim Moriarty in one final snowy showdown? Will it include Sherlock and Watson at all, or could the episode bring audiences up to speed on what Moriarty has been doing in his absence between series two and three? Will all of the cast make an appearance, or will busy shooting schedule result in a tighter, more intimate mystery, completed in a single episode?
Don't ask us, we're not Sherlock.
