If you think you can flail around in life with no regard for the consequences, or even if you don’t (but particularly if you do), then you need to see the Oscar-nominated Wild Tales. As the second part of the ShortList Film Club (SFC), we screened it for our readers nationwide ahead before its official release - for free, no less.
The darkly comic anthology from Argentinian director Damián Szifrón comprises of six short stories, all featuring an element of revenge, and each is a lesson in consequence. What happens if you give a redneck the finger? Or batter down an explosives expert with bureaucracy? Co-produced, and influenced, by Pedro Almodóvar, it’s a portmanteau of anger, violence and irony.
That’s why it was not only up for Best Foreign Language Film at this year's Academy Awards but also put on for free by yours truly in London, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Liverpool.
