Sony confirms you'll be able to play PlayStation 2 games on your PS4
Sony has confirmed that it's working on a PlayStation 2 emulator for the PlayStation 4
Grand Theft Auto III. Metal Gear Solid 2. Tekken 5. All games you could soon be booting up on your shiny PlayStation 4.
Sony has confirmed, somewhat stutteringly, that it's working on a PlayStation 2 emulator for the PlayStation 4 - and the first games to use the technology are already available.
Eurogamer first noticed that a bundle of titles that arrive with the new Star Wars: Battlefront - consisting of Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter - aren't HD remakes or ports, but run using the new emulator technology.
Games boot up with an upscaled version of the PS2 logo (sending a welcome shiver of nostalgia down your spine), while animations and performance receive a notable boost. Eurogamer even reports that Jedi Starfighter ran at a silky-smooth 60fps (a stat that'll get some gamers mightily excited).
So when will Sony be rolling out the emulator to more developers? Will we be dusting off our old PS2 discs and searching second-hand stores to relive the glory days of Medal of Honor: Frontline? The above Star Wars titles are accessed with a PSN code - but will this by standard? Sony is remaining tight lipped for now, only confirming with Wired that the technology is on its way...
"We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation," wrote a Sony representative. "We have nothing further to comment at this point in time."
We'll bring you more word as soon as we get it - but it's looking like your old faithful PS2 might finally be given the retirement it deserves.
