Star Wars Episode IX could be filmed in actual space
A few short years into the future, in a galaxy very, very nearby, Colin Trevorrow wants to do something incredible.
The director of the (yet to be titled) Star Wars: Episode IX has already announced that he'll be following in the footsteps of JJ Abrams by shooting the final instalment of Disney's new saga on film rather than capturing it digitally - but the Jurassic World director is keen to take the franchise to new, unprecedented heights.
Speaking on a Sundance Film Festival panel, Power of Story: The Art of Film, Trevorrow stated that he wanted to shoot the film "on location".
"I asked the question, 'Is it possible for us to shoot IMAX film plates in actual space for Star Wars'," said Trevorrow, "and I haven't gotten an answer yet, but they've shot IMAX in space!"
Whether Pinewood gets to work on a new spaceport or not, Episode IX wouldn't be the first piece of sci-fi to use space as its shooting location: in addition to IMAX documentaries, 2008's Apogee of Fear was shot aboard the International Space Station, when self-funded astronaut Richard Garriott captured various elements of the eight-minute long film during his 12 day stay.
While Apogee of Fear is a relative Pluto compared to Episode IX's Jupiter, Trevorrow isn't alone in wanting to film major motion pictures in space. The director shared the Sundance panel with Christopher Nolan, who stated a similar interest:
"Funny enough, we had that conversation with Interstellar," said Nolan. "There's incredible footage from space now."
So long as the sound guy knows they might have some difficulties, we're all for it.
