Stranger Things' Chief Hopper took down Trump with powerful awards speech
"We will get past the lies. We will hunt down the monsters."
In case you missed it, the cast of Stranger Things won a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series on Sunday.
The reason that’s a surprise is because they were up against TV giants Game of Thronesand The Crown.
Although, not as big a surprise as the acceptance speech that David Harbour (Chief Hopper) gave when the cast accepted the award.
As he shook with passion, notes in one hand, SAG Award in the other, after the pleasantries he began by saying it was hard to celebrate given what was happening in the world right now. Though he didn’t mention Trump by name, his speech was clearly directed at the executive orders he had signed.
And if Trump thought Hollywood was going to stay quiet after he said they weren’t real people and he didn’t care about celebrities, he forgot that Hollywood doesn’t give an eff.
Harbour shouted through his anger, calling for his colleagues to:
“Through our craft, cultivate a more empathetic and understanding society by revealing intimate truths that serve as a forceful reminder to folks that when they feel broken and afraid and tired, they are not alone.”
He gathered pace tying the themes of Stranger Things to current affairs, agreeing that we should indeed punch white nationalists in the face and promising to never give up repelling bullies.
By the end of it, the entire room were on their feet cheering in solidarity.
And through it all, Winona Ryder did a facial expression translation for those of us who couldn’t process our emotions.
