There we were, one hand pressing the Technics RP DH 1200 over-ear speaker to our head, the other pumping the air to the beat, when we received a light tap on the shoulder from a fellow commuter telling us to “calm it down”.
Good: Great sound for affordable price
Bad: Chunky looks might put people off
Price:£149.99
We were just testing Panasonic’s marketing hype: these Technics look to provide superstar DJ sound quality from a set of folding headphones capable of being chucked in your bag.
Despite their portable ambitions, the Technics are a big chunk of headphone – even when folded down with cable detached. But this girth makes them reassuringly sturdy, and their solid weight is kept comfortable thanks to masses of padding on the ear pieces and headband. You won’t wear these out for a jog, but they’re ideal for anyone looking for on-ear headphones that will survive some knocks.
We were impressed with the sound balance the Technics produced: the bass leads the way, but you don’t lose the subtler tones of a track in a mass of rumbling low-end noises. They’re also capable of pumping out some impressive volume without loss of sound quality or obvious noise bleed. The in-line mic and volume control also performed well.
If you’re looking to spend under £200 on some powerful headphones, the Technics RP DH 1200 are worthy of your consideration.
