If we asked you to guess what Terry Venables was up to these days, we imagine you’d say something along the lines of, ‘some media work here and some business dealings there’. And you’d be correct.
We doubt you’d think to mention his role as Technical Advisor of non-league club Wembley FC, though. And we can’t say we’d blame you. However, and here comes the pay off, that’s exactly what he’s up to.
The former England manager, affectionately known as El Tel following a successful spell at Barcelona, has signed for the club, currently 13th in the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League, following its sponsorship deal with Budweiser.
It’s hoped the alliance will propel the team, known to its supporters as The Lions, as far as possible in next season’s FA Cup (also sponsored by Budweiser). Venables, himself is no stranger to FA Cup success, having won the competition as both player and manager with Tottenham Hotspur.
Talking about his surprise appointment, Venables commented: “Managing, coaching and teaching football has been an essential part of my life for over 30 years. This opportunity to share my knowledge of decades with an eager group of players and coaches was too important to turn down.
“If they are willing to learn, I am willing to teach. Grassroots football is essential for the lifeblood of the professional game and if I can leave Wembley FC in a better position than I found it then it will be a job well done. It is early days but the signs are encouraging.”
