Much like any other promising launch of the year, STRAFE claims to be "the future of video games". But that's where this Kickstarter project stops behaving like every other HD gun slinger. This is an antidote for anyone unimpressed with the 'next-gen' crowd.
Declaring itself as "the fastest, bloodiest, deadliest, most adjective-abusing, action-packed first-person shooter of 1996", this procedural shooter (it makes new levels every time you play it with a clever algorithm system) is a hot slice of blooded fun the likes of which you haven't seen since John Major was running the country.
Set aboard an abandoned space mining craft ICARUS, STRAFE leans heavily on the nostalgic thrills of titles like DOOM, Quake and Wolfenstien 3D - bringing the classic pixelated experiences to a contemporary audience.
While it sells itself on a silly aesthetic, the technical tricks of STRAFE are actually quite impressive. As well as the infinite possibilities of new levels, the game boasts full compatibility for the Oculus Rift. Nearing its Kickstarter funding goal, this old school shooter (one of the pledges even gives you icons to use with the near-defunct AOL messaging service) could be the most fun you have at a keyboard this year.
Set to arrive in July, you can bag the game for around £10 via the funding page.
