With an unknown world to explore and countries filled with ancient valuables to 'borrow', the Victorians didn't have any time to make video games. If they had, their efforts would probably have looked a lot like the R-KAID-R.
This gorgeous wooden arcade cabinet is the work of Love Hultèn, a Swedish designer with a love for wooden grains and video games.
Created as "a manifestation and a tribute to the arcade", the R-KAID-R is a fully-portable arcade emulator. Housed in a rather splendid leather travel case (sold separately, but it would be a crime not to get one), users must unscrew the box with a handle that doubles as the cabinet's joystick. Load up your emulated games via the USB or SD Card reader (the system supports pretty much every retro game console we can think of), crank up the brass volume dial and prepare to party like it's 1899.
A variety of wooden finishes will be - including dark walnut, black ash, dark emerald green maple, emerald green maple and walnut - with all buttons, hinges and joints finished in polished brass. Only 50 units of each wooden finish will be made, making the R-KAID-R a rather exclusive system.
Available from September, we imagine only the keenest of retro gamers will be happy to meet the £1,980 (€2,499) price tag. Still, you're guaranteed to turn heads when you pull this out of your bag on the bus home. Head over to Love Hultèn's website to register your interest.
