The Braveheart TV series is on the way

Despite accusations of historical inaccuracy, Braveheart was, along with with Titanic and Crash, a real "people's champion" at the Oscars.

Okay so that might just be a polite way of saying that it wasn't that year's best film (in 1995 that would have been The Usual Suspects) but it was a big box office hit and helped Scottish tourism in the process.

With the recent influx of battle-related TV shows doing rather well (see Game of Thrones and Spartacus), Mel Gibson's epic is now being transported to the small screen, well the essence is anyway.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the series will focus on William Wallace's "back story, his years spent attempting to unify Scotland, his loves and losses as well as his legendary battles with King Edward the Longshank and rival Robert the Bruce."

It's heading into development now, with Scottish director Mick Davis at the helm. It will be jointly produced by a number of LA-based companies and, reassuringly, STV, which is a Scottish TV channel for those not in the know.

We're hoping this will all mean a lack of Australian accents. But we're going to wait and see.
