This new Netflix documentary about the music industry currently has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes
Maybe your next fix?
After devouring their first-rate movies and TV shows, Netflix has some truly incredible documentaries on offer - from true crime shows like Making a Murderer to nature docs presented by David Attenborough. But if you’re looking for a change of pace, look no further than their latest offering, The Defiant Ones.
This four-episode documentary, which originally aired on HBO in America, currently holds an 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The show tells the stories of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre — one the son of a Brooklyn longshoreman, the other straight out of Compton — and their improbable partnership and surprising leading roles in contemporary culture.
You will of course know about American rapper and music mogul Dr. Dre. He’s won six Grammys and championed the careers of iconic acts like 2Pac, Eminem, 50 Cent and Kendrick Lamar.
But it’s his business partner Jimmy Iovine who you might not have heard of – and yet it was this partnership that led to the creation of mega-successful Beats Electronics, which was sold to Apple for an eye-watering $3 billion in 2014.
The series also features interviews with such music legends as Bono, David Geffen, Eminem, Nas, Stevie Nicks, Ice Cube, Gwen Stefani, Jon Landau, Tom Petty, Trent Reznor, Snoop Dogg, Bruce Springsteen, Diddy and will.i.am, as well as Dre and Iovine themselves, and is pretty much essential viewing for anyone interested in the history of hip-hop and modern pop.
The Rotten Tomatoes summary for the show reads: “The Defiant Ones is a compelling, comprehensive portrait of two visionaries that illuminates both their colorful pasts and their historic influence on the music industry.”
All four episodes will be available to stream on Netflix from 23 March. We’ll be there.
