The evolution of technology is usually quite predictable: only the fittest gadgets survive, becoming more sophisticated with each generation. Except when it takes an unexpected hipster-leap sideways and confuses everyone.
The OTTO camera is a neat example of the latter. Rather than cramming more megapixels or 6K images into tiny box, OTTO serves a very niche purpose: capturing simple, low quality GIF animations.
GIFs can be made in a variety of ways - either editing down existing video media or sticking a bunch of stills together flick-book style. The OTTO camera creates GIFs by capturing individual frames with a turn of its film-winder-esque crank handle. You can then share the resulting viral-friendly short by uploading it to your smartphone.
In addition to adding filters, shades and an assortment of hipster effects, the accompanying OTTO app also allows you to change the way the camera's onboard Raspberry Pi (a tiny computer) captures images - from timelapses to more sophisticated hacks with an accompanying extensions.
Currently looking for funding on Kickstarter, you can nudge the OTTO project toward its goal and nab one for around £120.
