The Michael Bastian Smartwatch

It's finally happening. After countless square monsters, plastic lumps and buttoned failures, smartwatches are finally getting a style overhaul.

While we hold our collective breath to see if Apple's much-rumoured entry to the growing market will be a new 'iPhone moment', American designer Michael Bastian has teamed up with the tech-heads at Hewlett-Packard to create a promising new contender - but they aren't showing all of it yet.

This stealthy curve of glass and 44m of stainless steel holds a smartwatch compatible with both iOS and Android smartphones via an accompanying app. This allows the wearer to receive emails, text messages and similar notifications, while also controlling functions like music playback and changing the layout of the watch face.

If the all-black look is a touch too try hard, a concept sketch promises that the band can be swapped for perforated brown leather and olive green nylon. Due to arrive in the autumn, your wrist is about to become a much smarter, stylish joint.
