The most expensive 'Game of Thrones' death of all time is also one of its most satisfying
Arya's list doesn't come cheap
If there’s one thing Game of Thrones excels at, it’s gory, merciless deaths that can come at any time, and to any character George RR Martin decides to yank from our screens – regardless of their popularity (RIP Hodor).
The financial outlay required to bring these bloody departures to life probably isn’t something you thought about a lot at the time. Nobody – not even the most passionate accountancy student – was totting up the rough cost of blood bags the first time they watched the infamous Red Wedding massacre.
But it’s interesting nonetheless. If you were going to have a guess at the priciest Game of Thrones death ever, what would your money be on? Khal Drogo taking an unconventional approach to crowning Viserys by drowning him in molten gold? Wrong. Cersei and the fuckoff wildfire explosion? Nope. Something to do with dragons, then, right? Incorrect.
As it turns out, the most expensive GoT death was Arya Stark’s brutal offing of the despicable Meryn Trant, the first person on her extensive hitlist.
In case you need you memory jogging, here it is in all of its stabby stabby glory.
Showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff made an appearance at the 2017 SXSW Festival in Texas, where they were quizzed on why that particular scene cost so much. Benioff’s response? “She couldn’t really poke out his eyes”.
