The debut solo song by Tom from Keane is here and it's brilliant
Keane frontman strikes out with solo debut
Who? Tom Chaplin
What’s the story? The recently-revealed list of the 60 biggest-selling albums in the 60 years of the Official Charts saw a spot at number 35 for Keane's 2004 debut Hopes and Fears, which might be the last time a lot of you ever listened to the band. But, while lesser-selling (although still pretty big) follow-up Under The Iron Sea was a little mixed, the following albums, Perfect Symmetry and particularly 2012's Strangeland, were absolute masterclasses in timeless songwriting, with huge, soaring melodies and wistful lyrics abounding.
Now singer Tom Chaplin ventures out on his own with a debut solo album The Wave, (produced by Matt Hales, aka Aqualung) which is due on 14 October. This song, Hardened Heart. is the first taste of it, and Keane fans will be pleased to hear that those melodies are still present and correct, while the absence of the distinctive piano allows other instrumentation to take up the space, with the lyrics being strikingly personal. Essentially, if you're a Keane fan, you'll love it - and if you haven't listened to them since that debut, now's your time to dive back in.
