A truly blockbusting film in every sense of the word, Gladiator was an epic tale of valour, revenge and bravery set, of course, in Ancient Rome against the magnificent backdrop of The Coliseum (although the one seen in the film was actually larger than the real thing, after director Ridley Scott deemed it "too small").
Production was not straightforward, with the death midway through filming of Oliver Reed resulting in the need to rewrite the script and employ some nifty CGI, which all helped to create a budget which grew in excess of $100m. However, the investment paid off with the movie becoming a commercial and critical smash, reigniting interest in Roman history and legends.
