Say goodbye to your social life - 'Theme Hospital' is getting a reboot
The '90s classic is coming back with a bunch of new features
What’s the best computer game you’ve ever played? Wrong, it’s actually Theme Hospital.
The ‘90s classic was a veritable treasure trove, giving you hours of entertainment despite all logic dictating you ought to have binned it off immediately.
If you don’t remember the glory of it all, let us bring it all back to you here.
Or, alternatively, wait a little while and play the new version. Yes, that’s right, the new version. Well, sort of.
Revamps and remasters have been all the rage of late, with Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy dominating many of our summers.
The nostalgia kick is great, but will the new Theme Hospital be as hard as the new Crash?
Theme Hospital first emerged in 1997, the same year as Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, and as such is getting some modernised graphics for its reinvention as ‘Project Hospital’, which has been described as a new take on the classic game.
For the uninitiated, the new game will allow players to “become an aspiring architect, a successful manager and an ace doctor all at the same time” – so that’s the realism of overworked modern doctors ticked off the list.
I know what you’re thinking. It sounds boring in principle, but in reality it’s anything but. The funny references and bizarre diseases and ailments (Bloaty Head, anyone?) are what got fans on board in the early days, and we’re sure to see plenty of players rush to relive that experience.
The new Project Hospital game will be released on Steam in 2018, with Oxymoron Games behind it. A lot of the visuals are recognisable from the original Bullfrog Productions/Electronic Arts creations, but it remains to be seen whether more diseases or more pop culture references emerge.
